Have we been here before? Well, maybe not exactly… but close enough! That’s the argument that today’s guest, Professor Jim Morone makes, and why we should look to the past when trying to figure out what lies ahead. History also shows us that demographic changes (like Latinos moving right) and arguments about the merit of divided government have been features of our politics since the very beginning.

While the events of today are unprecedented in many ways, boosted by intense tribalism and rampant disinformation, there are examples from our countryโ€™s past that we can look to understand the democratic institutions that are, as of now, holding strong.

BIO: James A. Morone is the John Hazen White professor of political science and public policy at Brown University. He is author of two New York Times notable books and the award-winning Hellfire Nation: The Politics of Sin in American History. He has won university-wide teaching awards five times and been elected to the National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. His most recent book, the recent Republic of Wrath: How American Politics Turned Tribal, From George Washington to Donald Trump, published in September. The New York Times says it โ€œoffers a fresh theory to an already sizable pile of explanations for our dismal politics.โ€ Jim lives in New Hampshire
