The fiscal cliff – a time where tax rates would increase while government spending decreases, is now too close for comfort. It is the hot topic in all politically focused news outlets, and representatives of almost all ideologies have given their take regarding the matter. For instance, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) has recently accused Speaker of the House John Boehner (R) of lacking leadership as the dueling sides seek solutions in what they say could be an economic disaster. But is it really John Boehner’s fault? I don’t think so. At least no more than it is Harry Reid’s fault, or the politician next to them.
No, at the end of the day blame will not be solely on the shoulders of Speaker Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Reid, or even President Obama.
Rather, blame will fall on Republicans and Democrats alike, for they have incrementally moved us towards “the cliff” with each irresponsible, politically motivated vote – often favoring political strategy over liberty-oriented common sense.
Further, blame will fall on the majority of American voters, for continuing to elect entertainers actively displaying the same song and dance. What our nation needs is a new song altogether – not R&D cover bands who fail to wow us with the same tired set lists.
How disappointing is it that we’re here, where our leaders are stumped by the problems before them? They’ve dug us all into a hole so deep that there’s no longer a solution that they can agree is a victory. They’d rather just blame the other guy in order to save face with their constituents.
And yet Harry Reid now wants to throw in the towel and start discussing ways that government can have more power over the American people? He insinuates that, since there won’t be an agreement on “the cliff,” which inevitably resigns us to it, Congress should return to Washington to discuss other important matters such as stricter gun control measures.
Why? Because that’s the way Washington works. If they can’t agree on the approach that best suits them (collectively), the American People will just have to deal with the repercussions while they (Congress) develop some new way to restrict the liberties of free adults. Because all problems can be resolved by taking more money and restricting more freedom (insert sarcasm here).
