CSS 11: New Mexico Adds Straight Ticket Voting to Screw Gary Johnson, Media Breakdown of ‘Monkey It Up’

Chris Spangle explains why the Democrat Secretary of State in New Mexico has hacked their election more than any Russians by changing laws that will hurt Gary Johnson’s run. He then breaks down the anatomy of media bias using a clip about the Florida Senate race to teach people how to recognize bad news-making.

“Trump personally lobbying GOP senators to flip on Sessions”

President Donald Trump is venting about Attorney General Jeff Sessions to “any senator who will listen,” according to a Republican Senate aide. Trump in recent days has personally lobbied Senate Republicans to flip on Sessions. “The president … finally got traction on Capitol Hill thanks to the growing frustration of a handful of GOP senators with their former colleague — most importantly, Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley and South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham, who have been irritated by Sessions’ opposition to a criminal justice reform bill they support,” Eliana Johnson and Elana report.

“Trump has come to resent him for other reasons,” they write, “griping to aides and lawmakers that the attorney general doesn’t have the Ivy League pedigree the president prefers, that he can’t stand his Southern accent and that Sessions isn’t a capable defender of the president on television — in part because he ‘talks like he has marbles in his mouth,'” the president has told aides.” White House aides say the impetus for Trump’s latest push to oust Sessions was last week’s dual convictions of former lawyer Michael Cohen and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

How McCain Got the Last Word Against Trump

The late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) planned out his farewell tour before his death. Soon after learning of his terminal brain cancer last summer, he began holding weekly meetings in his Capitol Hill office with trusted aides to discuss his funeral. “He obsessed over the music, selecting the Irish ballad ‘Danny Boy’ and several patriotic hymns,” The New York Times’ Michael D. Shear and Katie Rogers report. “He choreographed the movement of his coffin from Arizona, his home state, to Washington. And in April, when he knew the end was coming, he began reaching out to Republicans, Democrats and even a Russian dissident with requests that they deliver eulogies and serve as pallbearers.”

“By the time he died on Saturday, Mr. McCain had carefully stage-managed a four-day celebration of his life — but what was also an unmistakable rebuke to President Trump and his agenda,” they continue. “In death, Mr. McCain found a way to have the last word, even quietly making it clear through friends that Mr. Trump was not welcome at the services.” McCain’s memorial events began this week. He lay in state at the Arizona Capitol on Wednesday. A memorial is scheduled at North Phoenix Baptist Church today. Then his casket will fly to Washington, D.C., where McCain will lie in state inside the Capitol’s rotunda

McCain’s closest friends say he had little respect for Trump but didn’t hold a personal grudge against him. That lack of respect, however, was mutual. McCain requested that Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama speak at his funeral, while Trump wasn’t invited. “Inside the White House, the president’s aides briefly considered the optics of hosting events — including Thursday’s [campaign] rally [in Indiana] just as the senator’s body is scheduled to be in transit to Washington — but decided that they could not hold up White House proceedings for several days,” they write.

Rand Paul’s Criminal Justice Reform Poll

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is set to join criminal justice reform advocates today to release new polling that highlights the issue’s popularity in his home state — which he shares with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who has vowed to move ahead on the issue after the midterms if a whip count reveals that a bipartisan deal can clear the Senate. Huddle got a first look at the poll, sponsored by Justice Action Network and conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, which shows that 70 percent of Kentucky voters support bringing any Trump-backed deal on prison and sentencing changes to a Senate vote, with majorities in all partisan affiliations giving no pushback to McConnell on the issue.

US rejects UN court jurisdiction over Iran sanctions case
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar]

โ€œThe United States told the UNโ€™s top court it has no jurisdiction to rule on Iranโ€™s demand for the suspension of nuclear-related sanctions recently reimposed on the country. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague โ€˜lacks prima facie jurisdiction to hear Iranโ€™s claims,โ€™ US State Department lawyer Jennifer Newstead argued on Tuesday. During the first hearing of the case on Monday, Iran argued that US President Donald Trump breached a 1955 treaty with his decision to reimpose sanctions after withdrawing from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. Newstead said the US has the right to protect its national security and other interests. She said the treaty โ€˜cannot, therefore, provide a basis for this courtโ€™s jurisdictionโ€™ in the case.โ€

FL: DeSantis warns voters not to โ€œmonkey this upโ€ by electing Gillum

โ€œRep. Ron DeSantis, the Republican nominee for governor, warned Floridians on Fox News not to โ€˜monkey this upโ€™ by electing Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, the Democratic nominee and an African-American. โ€˜The last thing we need to do is monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state,โ€™ DeSantis said Wednesday. The Florida Democratic Party called DeSantis out immediately. โ€˜Itโ€™s disgusting that Ron DeSantis is launching his general election campaign with racist dog whistles,โ€™ FDP Chairwoman Terrie Rizzo said in a statement. Gillum spokesman Geoff Burgan said the campaign was letting the FDP respond.โ€

Kavanaughโ€™s ties to disgraced mentor loom over confirmation
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

โ€œSeeking confirmation to a federal judgeship after years of Democratic opposition, Brett Kavanaugh turned to one of his most powerful mentors for a boost. Judge Alex Kozinski, of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in California, traveled to Washington, D.C., in 2006 to speak on behalf of Kavanaugh โ€” โ€˜my good friend and former law clerk.โ€™ He told the Senate Judiciary Committee that Kavanaugh had the legal skills, demeanor and โ€˜sense of humanityโ€™ to be a brilliant federal judge. Kavanaugh thanked Kozinski for advancing his career and promised to bring the same โ€˜thoughtfulness and dedication to the rule of law that Judge Kozinski has demonstrated on the bench for more than two decades.โ€™ Twelve years later, Kavanaugh will face senators on the same committee beginning Tuesday for confirmation hearings on his nomination by President Donald Trump to the U.S. Supreme Court. This time, he is certain to face questions about his links to Kozinski, who has since become the poster child for sexual harassment in the federal judiciary.โ€

California becomes first state to condemn intersex surgeries on children

โ€œCalifornia on Tuesday became the first state in the nation to condemn unnecessary surgeries on intersex children. The Legislature passed a resolution demanding the medical community halt nonconsensual medical procedures that try to cosmetically โ€˜normalizeโ€™ variations in intersex childrenโ€™s sex characteristics. The resolution, which calls the practice a human rights violation, is a landmark moment for the intersex community, advocates say. โ€˜It means for the very first time a U.S. legislative body has affirmatively recognized that intersex children deserve dignity and the right to make decisions about their own bodies โ€” just like everyone else,โ€™ Kimberly Zieselman, executive director of interACT Advocates for Intersex Youth, told USA TODAY.โ€

CA: Brown signs bill eliminating money bail
Source: Merced Sun-Star

โ€œGov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed sweeping legislation to eliminate cash bail in California. The change, which will take effect in October 2019, goes further than any other state in the country to remove money from pretrial detention. โ€˜Today, California reforms its bail system so that rich and poor alike are treated fairly,โ€™ Brown said in a statement. Under Senate Bill 10, California will replace bail with โ€˜risk assessmentsโ€™ of individuals and non-monetary conditions of release. Counties will establish local agencies to evaluate any individual arrested on felony charges for their likelihood of returning for court hearings and their chances of re-arrest.โ€

Facebook employees group criticises โ€œpolitical monocultureโ€
Source: Financial Times [UK]

โ€œMore than a hundred Facebook employees have joined an internal group criticising the social network for having a โ€˜political monoculture,โ€™ as the company comes under fire from US conservatives and President Donald Trump who claim it has a leftwing bias. The group โ€” called โ€˜FBโ€™ers for Political Diversityโ€™ โ€” was created last week by Brian Amerige, a senior Facebook engineer, and first reported on by the New York Times. โ€˜We claim to welcome all perspectives, but are quick to attack โ€” often in mobs โ€” anyone who presents a view that appears to be in opposition to left-leaning ideology,โ€™ Mr Amerige wrote in the memo. A person close to Facebook said the group was intended to be constructive and inclusive of different political viewpoints, and includes people on the left and right. Russian, Chinese, Mongolian regimes to hold biggest war games since Cold War

The myth that wonโ€™t die: Undocumented aliens are criminals
Source: Reason
by Shikha Dalmia

โ€œFBI statistics show that border towns like San Diego and El Paso, which have large unauthorized populations, have some of the lowest crime rates in the country โ€” and conversely cities like Detroit and Baltimore that have few immigrants have among the highest. Correlation is not causation, and it is possible that undocumented immigrants move to cities with low crime rates rather than actually lowering these rates โ€” although this would still show that undocumented immigrants donโ€™t lead to a rise in crime. However, there is other evidence that suggests that in fact they do indeed lead to a drop in crime rates. Between 1991 and 2008, California added an unprecedented 3.7 million foreigners โ€” about a third of them unauthorized. And what happened to the Golden Stateโ€™s crime rate? It dropped an eye-popping 55 percent. Whatโ€™s true for California is also true for the rest of the country. Multiple studies attribute the precipitous drop in the national crime rate in the 1990s to a growth in immigration, specifically undocumented immigration.โ€ (08/29/18)

The clash of generations and American foreign policy
Source: Cato Institute
by A Trevor Thrall, William Ruger, & Erik Goepner

โ€œToday, with the midterms looming as a referendum on President Donald Trump, the nationโ€™s most powerful Baby Boomer, several commentators have noted that Millennial turnout could very well dictate the composition of the next Congress โ€” and their electoral weight will only keep growing. In 2016, Baby Boomers made up 31 percent of voters compared to the Millennialsโ€™ 27 percent. But with Boomer numbers declining and Millennials more likely to vote as they age, these young adults could overtake their elders at the ballot box in 2020. For all the concerns about Millennials, however, the story behind Americaโ€™s attitude shifts on foreign policy is more mixed than many realize.โ€ (08/29/18)

Did the FBI cover up evidence that China hacked Clintonโ€™s State Department emails?
Source: Investors Business Daily
by staff

โ€œMore than three years after Hillary Clinton admitted that sheโ€™d used an unsecured private email server to handle classified emails while secretary of State, and two years after the FBI exonerated her, we finally learn what we should have known all along. That China apparently had unfettered access to all her emails, including many that were highly classified. According to the Daily Caller, the only news site that has continued to pursue this story, a Chinese-owned company gained access to Clintonโ€™s unsecured private server, and embedded code that then sent them copies of every email she sent. The story goes to note that the FBI knew about this, even as then FBI-Director James Comey was drafting Clintonโ€™s get-out-of-jail free statement. Two officials from the Intelligence Community Inspector Generalโ€™s office discovered the code, and โ€˜met repeatedly with FBI officials to warn them of the Chinese intrusion,โ€™ the Daily Callerโ€™s Frank Pollock reports. The ICIG discovered the โ€˜anomalyโ€™ in early 2015, Pollock says, soon after the FBI started its investigation.โ€

America is being scandalized by four enormous events
Source: Fox News Forum
by Michael Goodwin

โ€œHereโ€™s my view of whatโ€™s happening to our country. America is being scandalized by four enormous events that are happening simultaneously. โ€ฆ The first scandalizing event is Donald Trump โ€” his candidacy, his election and his presidency. (And, on some days to some people, his existence.) โ€ฆ Still, Trump won the election fairly and the economy is booming, yet too many Americans canโ€™t accept those truths. Their attempts to bring him down define the three other scandalizing events: First is the conduct of the mainstream media, which has abandoned all standards of fairness and continues to embarrass itself with overt bias against the president. โ€ฆ Another scandalizing event is the behavior of some federal agencies. The Justice Department, the FBI and the CIA took liberties that were morally offensive, and possibly illegal, because they didnโ€™t want Trump to be president. โ€ฆ The fourth scandalizing event is the reaction of Democrats to Trump. Led by Hillary Clinton, the party has thrashed about like wounded animals caught in a steel trap.โ€ (08/29/18)

Amazon slams Bernie Sanders over โ€œinaccurateโ€ accusations against company
Source: Fox News

โ€œE-commerce giant Amazon took to its blog on Wednesday to hit back at โ€˜inaccurate and misleadingโ€™ criticisms from Sen. Bernie Sanders, in an unusual political post from the tech giant. Amazon refuted the Independent Vermont senatorโ€™s claims that it doesnโ€™t pay lower-level employees a livable wage and therefore workers have to rely on government assistance programs, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), at the expense of other taxpayers. โ€˜Senator Sanders continues to spread misleading statements about pay and benefits,โ€™ representatives for the company wrote on its Day One blog. โ€˜Amazon is proud to have created over 130,000 new jobs last year alone. In the U.S., the average hourly wage for a full-time associate in our fulfillment centers, including cash, stock, and incentive bonuses, is over $15/hour before overtime. A panacea or a death sentence?
Source: Heartland Institute
by Greg Walcher

โ€œThis summer the Administration published its much-anticipated plan to modify enforcement of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The most powerful environmental law ever enacted, it was signed into law 45 years ago, and has steadily become more powerful and intrusive. Decades of controversy have ensued about whether limiting human activity is justified, and there have been numerous attempts at โ€˜reform,โ€™ but the law remains mostly unchanged. Originally understood by most Americans as an effort to save high-profile species like the bald eagle and grizzly bear, the lawโ€™s reach has grown to include 2,407 species of plants, animals, fish, birds, mollusks, and worms. Another 18 species are about to be added, another 28 are considered โ€˜candidates for listing.โ€™ Over the life of the ESA, just over one percent have been removed from the list, making the goal of species recovery one of governmentโ€™s most dismal failures.โ€ (08/28/18)

This one tiny bill will end the imperial presidency

โ€œThe Constitution gave the President few powers. Congress shucked its duties and delegated huge chunks of legislative authority to unelected bureaucrats. Those bureaucrats, who work for the President, now write most of the rules that you must obey. And โ€ฆ That disturbing reality allows the President to issue dictates on nearly every aspect of your life, with no checks or balances to get in the way. Corporate welfare lives on and on
Source: The American Conservative
by Doug Bandow

โ€œCongress created the usual special interest frenzy with its latest iteration of the farm bill. Agricultural subsidies are one of the most important examples of corporate welfare โ€” money handed out to businesses based on political connections. The legislation suffered a surprise defeat in the House, being viewed as too stingy. But it is certain to return. Fiscal responsibility is out of fashion. The latest federal budget, drafted by a Republican president and Republican-controlled Congress, blew through the loose limits established under Democratic President Barack Obama. The result is trillion-dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. Spending matters. So does the kind of spending. Any amount of corporate welfare is too much.โ€ (08/29/18)

Why China and Russia are obsessed with vast new war games
Source: Reuters
by Peter Apps

โ€œAs the West obsesses over Donald Trumpโ€™s legal and political challenges, Brexit and a host of other domestic crises, Chinese troops will join their Russian counterparts for Moscowโ€™s largest military exercises in more than three decades. Coming six months after Beijingโ€™s biggest ever offshore naval drills, the joint war games are another reminder of how central military posturing now is to the worldโ€™s two most powerful authoritarian states. While neither likely desires or expects war with the United States or its allies, both Beijing and Moscow want to give every impression they are increasingly ready โ€” and are relying on that message to dominate their neighborhoods and intimidate less-powerful nearby nations. Both countries also have an unambiguous message for the Pentagon: if war should come in Eastern Europe or the South China Sea, the United States would risk serious losses if it tried to intervene.โ€ (08/29/18)

A faulty gun report

โ€œWhile statistics are generally unreliable, data about gun crimes often qualify as โ€˜anti-data.โ€™ โ€˜This spring the U.S. Education Department reported that in the 2015-2016 school year, โ€˜nearly 240 schools โ€ฆ reported at least 1 incident involving a school-related shooting,โ€ National Public Radio told us yesterday. Apple, Google, et al. strike a blow against the college cartel
Source: National Review
by Frederick M Hess & Grant Addison

โ€œIs there good reason to believe that having a B.A. in sociology or womenโ€™s studies makes one more qualified to be a stocker at Costco or shift supervisor at Starbucks? No, there isnโ€™t. In fact, thereโ€™s clear evidence that over-credentialing is bad for workers and for businesses. A comprehensive 2017 study by researchers at Harvard Business School found that college graduates filling middle-skill positions cost more to employ, have higher turnover rates, tend to be less engaged, and are no more productive than high-school graduates doing the same job. The long-term consequences of degree inflation look to be even worse, as employers continue to pay a premium for a college-educated workforce even when filling positions that non-credentialed workers could just as easily do, leading ever more students to incur the costs of pursuing a degree.โ€ (08/29/18)

Myth that health outcomes and costs are better in socialized healthcare systems, part 2
Source: Cobden Center
by Jai Khemani

โ€œAs we have seen earlier, single payer costs more than people think and health outcomes in the U.S are not worse than the UK and Canada. Furthermore, the gap between US healthcare spending and UK healthcare spending is a recent phenomenon. While the U.S spends more than double per person than the UK, the gap between US and UK healthcare spending was initially small (in terms of % of GDP). For example, in 1960, UK healthcare spending was 3.9% of GDP, compared with 5.1% of GDP in the U.S. While the U.S spent more than the UK even in 1960, the gap is considerably smaller than today. In addition, healthcare is a luxury good. This means that demand for healthcare increases more than proportionally when income rises.โ€ (08/29/18)

How the Department of Homeland Security created a deceptive tale of Russia hacking US voter sites

โ€œThe narrative of Russian intelligence attacking state and local election boards and threatening the integrity of U.S. elections has achieved near-universal acceptance by media and political elites. And now it has been accepted by the Trump administrationโ€™s intelligence chief, Dan Coats, as well. But the real story behind that narrative, recounted here for the first time, reveals that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) created and nurtured an account that was grossly and deliberately deceptive. DHS compiled an intelligence report suggesting hackers linked to the Russian government could have targeted voter-related websites in many states and then leaked a sensational story of Russian attacks on those sites without the qualifications that would have revealed a different story. When state election officials began asking questions, they discovered that the DHS claims were false and, in at least one case, laughable.โ€ (08/29/18)

Will Trump ramp up the Korea crisis again?
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

โ€œ[E]ven though President Trump announced after the Singapore meeting that the crisis with North Korea was over and that Americans could sleep soundly again, Trump and his national-security team have continued their system of brutal economic sanctions against North Korea. Their ostensible aim is to continue squeezing the life out of the North Korean people until such time that North Korea actually destroys it nuclear weapons. North Korea refuses to denuclearize until the U.S. government takes firm steps showing that it is no longer committed to regime change in North Korea. For his part, Trump insists that North Korea must denuclearize first and then Trump will help turn North Korea into a prosperous society. Thus the situation appears stalemated. The reality though โ€ฆ is that North Korea will never give up its nuclear weapons, no matter what Trump does. โ€ฆ North Korea knows that there is no way that it could ever trust U.S. officials to keep their word on any promise to abandon their longtime aim of regime change in North Korea.โ€ (08/29/18)
